Lessons from Life

I think it is important for us all to be aware of what we are learning in our own lives.

Too many times I will be excited about what I can learn from a new book or listening to a sermon (which are very good sources to learn from by the way).  However, the problem comes in when I ignore what I am learning from personal experiences and do not learn to grow from them.

In light of this, I wanted to share some thoughts from changes that have been made in my financial life.  I am getting married in June and am doing my best to learn and work on things to prepare myself for married life.

The month of May was the first month that me and my fiancee did a budget together.  It was pretty easy (and oddly kinda fun), we spent about 30 minutes last week and figured out what the month of May looked like financially.  (Side Note: I always recommend to do a new budget for each month because every month is different.)

The nugget that I am sharing today is that I am trying something that I have never tried before.

I am planning out meals.  Now you might be thinking, “that is awful, I would hate to do that.”  I am okay with that response but here is the thing, I am still in control of things and am not restricted by a schedule of meals.  I have a little dry erase board in my kitchen that I made the schedule on.  Guess what, I can erase and put in a new meal later on if I choose.  This schedule of meals is to be an aid and tool, not a burden.

I basically looked at what groceries I have and made a Monday through Sunday Schedule.  I find that it is actually fun and I get to look forward to meals that I really like.  I have of course put in times to eat out because lunch meetings are inevitable but I am definitely keeping a close eye to make sure I am not eating out in excess.

Like I said, I am still in week 1 of this experiment and will keep you updated on my thoughts but to be honest with you I really like it thus far.
